Transforming a Home into a Modern Indian Oasis
Transforming a Home into a Modern Indian Oasis
The client, a family of three, wanted to create a modern Indian traditional home that reflected their cultural heritage and personal style. Rakesh, a successful investment banker, Meera, a social worker for Indian women who make Indian clothes, and their daughter Aaina, a 10-year-old who loves reading books and Indian story books, all desired a home that was comfortable, stylish, and reflective of their interests. The color palette chosen by the client consisted of black, yellow, olive green, dark wood, orange, and white, and the use of traditional Indian elements was to be incorporated in a modern way.
A First Impression to Remember
A First Impression to Remember
The modern Indian foyer is a blend of traditional and contemporary design elements. The small print Indian wallpaper in light green colors creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while the brown wall beading behind it adds depth and dimension to the space. The focal point of the foyer is a mirror that is surrounded by intricate Indian artifacts, such as intricate metalwork or hand-carved wooden figurines. This not only serves as a functional element for guests to check their appearance before entering the home, but also as a display of the family's cultural heritage.
Designing for the Present, Embracing the Past
Designing for the Present, Embracing the Past
The living room was designed to be the heart of the home, reflecting the client's love for both modern and traditional Indian design. We chose a neutral color palette of black, white, and wood, and added splashes of yellow and olive green through textiles and accessories. The focal point of the room was the TV unit, which was designed to feature a collection of artifacts and decorative items. The unit was crafted from dark wood and had intricate Indian carvings, creating a striking contrast with the white walls. To bring a touch of traditional Indian design, we used a statement wall with an intricate Indian design wallpaper and added traditional Indian textiles like Kantha or Ikat in cushion covers and throw pillows. The furniture was a mix of modern and traditional, with rattan and wood elements, and the room was finished with natural fiber rugs and soft lighting to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Blending Tradition and Vibrancy
Blending Tradition and Vibrancy
The kitchen was to feature an Indian pattern tile and a vibrant overall look. We added a granite marble as a counter top looking at the indian cooking style of the family and incorporated a big crockery unit into the dining area with a statement wallpaper in between, using vibrant colors. A traditional Indian dining table set with carved wooden chairs was also considered to add a touch of tradition.

The master bedroom was designed with comfort and relaxation in mind, and was to be a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The client requested a wooden poster bed with a membrane wardrobe, a TV unit, and a small dresser for Meera. The color scheme was black, white, yellow, and wood, and the designer added jali screens and carved wooden elements in the headboard and wardrobe doors to bring a touch of traditional Indian design. A comfortable reading nook was also incorporated in the room for a cozy and intimate space, and the bed was dressed with soft linens in neutral colors to create a restful ambiance.

For Aaina's room, the client requested a white and pastel green color palette, with a focus on creating a bright and cheerful space. A wallpaper behind the bed was to be the feature of the room, with a curved bed headboard. The designer incorporated Aaina's love for books into the design, creating a bookshelf with a ladder to access the higher shelves and a small desk with a comfortable chair for studying. The room was finished with soft lighting, pastel green curtains, and a plush rug to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
